In order to complete this assignment for class, I found a few cylinder objects and photographed myself measuring the volumes. At first, the dimensions were found for each object. Next, the dimensions were plugged into the volume of a cylinder formula. From there, I found the volume. After I figured out the volume, I filled one object (glass vase) with M&M’s. I thought about the relationship between the volume and the amount of M&M’s it could hold. I then completed the same process for my other objects.
I would use this activity when I am a teacher in my own classroom. This activity is one for students to complete in the classroom setting, but also outside the classroom setting. The point of the activity is to help students understand the concept of volume. Students will be able to compare the volume and the amount held within. Different types of cylinder objects would be brought in by each student to do this activity. The students would be given an object and told the step-by-step directions provided. Each student can complete the process for a different item. The class can then come back together and compare their findings and graph them. This is a great hands on activity that allows students to discover a relationship and use what is learned inside of the classroom in their own lives outside of the classroom.
